All right, now let’s go on to our lesson so what we’re going to do with this English lesson we are going to start from beginning to end. So, from the moment you start feeling ill to after you’ve seen the doctor and now you’re better. And, you know, you can go on about your life.

Okay, so let’s start from the beginning. What prompts, or causes someone to have to go to a doctor, right, to have to see a doctor, things usually start with symptoms. Okay, this is the first clue. You have a symptom. So what are symptoms symptoms are the things that your body begins to feel, because of a disease or illness symptoms can include things like fever, headache, sore throat. You know, feeling sick and not feeling well those are all symptoms and something really important to know is that different symptoms, there are different symptoms for different illnesses.

Now, for example, someone who has the beginning stages of cancer might have different symptoms than someone who has diabetes. So someone with cancer might lose their appetite, they may might not feel like eating. They might lose weight. There’s all sorts of different symptoms they might have pain, whereas someone with the flu might get a fever or a headache. And then they recover, like it’s short term, maybe a few days a week, whereas someone with cancer, it’s going to be longer term longer term symptoms. Okay.

And these are things that will cause someone to contact a doctor. All right, so now what happens next. So once you call a doctor. What do you say, how do you make an appointment in English? How do you, you tell the receptionist or the secretary, that you need to see your doctor? So you can use different phrases for that, you can say something like, “I would like to make an appointment to see a doctor.” You can also say, ” I need to make an appointment to see a doctor.” Now this, “I need” shows a sense of urgency. This is when your situation is very serious. And they need to know that it’s important.

You can also ask a question like, “what is the earliest appointment I can get” or “what is the earliest appointment that I can make to see the doctor?”. Usually these are things that you can say phrases you can use in English in order to set an appointment.

Now usually what will happen is the receptionist might ask you like okay, what are your symptoms. Why do you need to see the doctor because when they schedule the appointment. They have to notate like in the computer on the calendar, what the reason is that you need to be seen as a patient, they have to document everything. So that is where you need to know your symptoms, and you can describe like, fever, headache congestion, all sorts of different symptoms that are causing you to need to see the doctor Okay, remember you can say like “I would like to make an appointment”,  “I need to see the doctor.” “What is the earliest appointment that I can get?”

Now, let’s talk about what happens after. Once you’re in the doctor’s office. Okay, so here you are, you chatting with the doctor explaining your symptoms, telling the doctor what you feel. And the doctor says okay, you know, it sounds like you might have. I don’t know pain or the cold who knows whatever the doctor says they will diagnose you Okay, they will give you a diagnosis and a prescription.

Now, and this is all in order to help you get better, based on your symptoms so I wanted to focus a little bit of time talking about a prescription. Now what is this. This is what we, this is the word that we use in English. When we are referring to medicine. This is the medicine that the doctor will give to you, that you need to go to a pharmacy and get this medicine so let’s look at some English phrases that we use to talk about prescriptions now. One of them is we say, fill the prescription or fill a prescription. You could also say get the prescription filled. Now in English we use this word “fill” notice this word filled. This means to get your getting your prescription filled. Now, if you go to a pharmacy. You could say something like, “Hello. I would like to fill my prescription.” “I would like to get this prescription filled.” “How long will this take?” and it might be a couple of hours. It might be a day okay but it is important that you guys know how to say that you need to get this medicine as soon as possible. And again we use this word, fill. So we have the prescription, which is the medicine, and we get the prescription prescription filled at a pharmacy.

Okay, now let’s talk about different types of appointments. When you go see a doctor. There are different kinds. Right. Not everyone is always going to go. You know, when they just get sick. There are different kinds. So, one kind of appointment is called a checkup, a checkup. Now this kind of appointment is, you’re fine you’re actually not sick. You don’t even really need to go. But you are going, just to check up on things to make sure that you’re okay so this can include like getting blood exams, to make sure that you’re healthy, no different you know no numbers that are of worry. And this is just to make sure that everything looks good. Okay. Most Americans have checkup appointments, every year.

Now we have something called a follow up appointment. Now, this appointment is after you have already seen the doctor once, or the initial or first appointment. And he says, Okay, take this prescription, take it for seven days. And then let’s schedule a follow up appointment to have you come back and check your health, again. Now this is a follow up appointment is the appointment that follows the first appointment to see what your current status is so you went to see him on Monday, let’s say, and on Friday, you go in for a follow up appointment. So he or, so the doctor can monitor. Make sure that the medicine is working correctly and actually helping you. And also to see if there’s anything else. Maybe that you need to change or do differently. Okay, so that’s a follow up appointment.

Now, we have a well check appointment. Now, we usually use this well check appointment with children. And this is like the yearly or every six months, appointments to just check on the child’s well being.

No we don’t usually use this with adults, unless it’s like a women’s well check, then that’s usually just for women, but well check is just usually used with children and it’s like, every year just to make sure they’re growing, make sure that they are, you know, meeting all of their milestones.

And then the final one that I want to talk about is an emergency appointment. And so this is when it’s like oh something’s happened. You don’t need it’s not so bad that like you have to go to the hospital, but it’s bad enough to where you need to get in there right away, see the doctor and get the situation, taken care of immediately essentially Okay, so an emergency appointment.

All right, so now let’s go into some questions guys I receive these questions, daily, Monica. How can I improve my English, Monica. How can I improve my listening? How can I improve my speaking? And I’ll tell you what, guys, it’s not that hard. It’s actually really simple. I think it’s so simple that like people just ignore it. They don’t even do it because it seems too simple like, no way. It’s too easy. There’s no way I can improve my English by doing what she’s saying, so I’m not gonna do it. That’s what I’ve noticed a lot of people, they don’t do it. And guess what, those are usually the people that say, What can I do to improve my English, but they don’t do it so they’re not really improving. So guys, let me tell you something.

It’s not enough to watch a YouTube video or listen to an English podcast, and you’re just gonna like get better at English, it’s just not enough. It’s not realistic for you guys to think, all you have to do is watch a video or listen to a podcast and boom, good English like I’m improving my English. Does it help? Yes! absolutely. But is it really going to take you to that next level of like fluency? Just listening? It’s not enough to, to make you fluent. You have to do it. How do you get better?Doing! You have to do it!  You have to do it.

So, I am going to give you a list of things that you can do in order to improve your English. Now, I do want to let you guys know if you guys are listening to my podcast, you can head over to my YouTube channel. It’s called English teacher Monica. And you can do this there. I try my best to read every comment and reply, if possible, so you guys leave a comment. Right. You know, do, do the assignments, do the homework, and I will do my best to respond and give you feedback, but you have to do the work. So, do the work, and we have this, this phrase in English that says, practice makes perfect. So when you practice something often you get really good at it to the point where it seems perfect now is everyone perfect no we don’t have to be perfect, native speakers don’t even speak English perfectly that’s not the point.

We don’t need to be perfect, but we need to improve and feel confident, that’s what really matters, improving and feeling confident because a lot of people come to me. They don’t know they don’t feel confident they feel nervous when they speak English. So guess what do what I’m telling you, and you are going to see an improvement. All right, now the other thing, homework assignment.

I have a homework assignment for you. And it is for you guys to tell me about a situation. In the past, where you had to make a doctor’s appointment. What happened, what prompted you or caused you to have to make a doctor’s appointment. And how did that go. Now, how this homework assignment help you. First of all, you are taking everything that you just learned in this lesson, and applying it into practice. That is the best way for you to remember and not forget what you’ve learned when you guys are watching something listening and then doing that is how it goes into your long term memory so you don’t forget.

This is how you guys become more confident English speakers, as well as more fluent English speakers and listeners. Okay, so your homework assignment, right in the comments. the last time that you went inside Doctor, what happened was it a well check. Was it a checkup? Did you bring your child to a well check. Did you have a checkup appointment was it a follow up appointment or was it an emergency appointment. Also tell me what were your symptoms.

What symptoms did you have that pushed you into the doctor to make a doctor’s appointment? And this is also how I am going to know if you guys are actually watching the entire English lesson, or if you guys are watching like a piece of it and then leaving. And, I mean, you can do that it’s fine, not everyone has time to watch the whole thing and got it. But I got that is what separates people from really becoming fluent and really learning from those who are just kind of okay. Okay. And I’ll tell you what, if you’ve come with me this far in the video lesson, you are probably one of the people that should be in my online classes.

Because people who watch these videos for five minutes and then leave. You know, maybe it could be that the video isn’t important it’s not something that they need to learn right now and that’s okay. But I, when I see you guys doing the homework assignments I know like okay, though, that that’s someone who actually is really dedicated.
